List of Items Needed to Get Started With the Preparation of the Individual Income Tax Returns
When it comes to preparing individual Federal or state income tax returns with us, here is the best way to get started. Please provide the following data points at your convenience.
You can return these items either by emailing them to us at clients@glasgowknight.com or by uploading these documents to a secure web portal (we can send you a private link).
Document request:

- Picture of your (and your spouse’s) unexpired driver’s license(s).
- Complete copy of the Federal (and state) income tax returns filed last year.
- All tax forms and statements you received in the mail, including (but not limited to): Forms W-2s (wage and earnings statements), Forms series 1099 (such as for retirement, dividends, interest, non-employee compensation, and several other reasons), mortgage interest and property taxes you paid and that were reported to you on Forms 1098, healthcare Forms series 1095, and any other tax-related Forms.
- Any notices or letters you received from the IRS (or the state(s)).
Please answer these questions:
- Did you have bank or other financial accounts in any foreign country during the year?
- Did you own or deal in cryptocurrency during the year?
- Did you participate in, invest in, or were affiliated with any tax shelters or off-shore financial activities during the year?
Please provide the following additional information, if it applies to you or your spouse:
- Let us know if you sold or purchased large-ticket items such as real estate (including land), automobiles, or items that you didn’t receive a tax Form for in the mail (for example, sold stamps or collectibles for cash, etc.).
- Let us know if you made any charitable contributions during the year.
- Let us know if you believe your medical expenses, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, and state taxes (all combined) will exceed $12,500 if you are single or married and filing separately, $18,500 for heads of household, or $25,000 for married, filing jointly. If that’s the case, please fill out our Schedule A template.
- Let us know if you own a business that doesn’t file a separate return. If you do, please provide income and expenses for your business by filling out our Schedule C template. We will prepare a Schedule C for your sole proprietorship.
- Let us know if you have a business that files separate Federal returns on Forms 1065, 1120, or 1120-S.
- Let us know if you have rental properties or interests in partnerships or trusts. Please provide income and expenses for your rentals by filling out our Schedule E template.
- Let us know if you or your spouse are not a U.S. citizen(s) or you traveled for extensive periods in and out of the country during the year.
If you have any questions about this information request, please let us know. We will be more than happy to assist.
